NES Department of Finance would like to invite professors, students, alumni, and friends to a series of roundtables on Public Policy in Finance. Through this series, we hope to promote a dialogue about the challenges facing our country and to evaluate possible policy solutions for navigating the Russian financial system through the rough waters of the 21st century. The topic of the first round table is bank regulation in the post-crisis period.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Global Financial Crisis, which drastically changed the landscape of modern financial markets. Several major banking institutions collapsed, and many others barely remained solvent. In a rush to make financial systems safe, regulators implemented a wide range of reforms. But has the new regulatory framework made the global banking system more resilient, or must we do more to prevent the next crisis?
Would greater regulation harm economic growth and reduce competition in the banking sector? Should macro-prudential regulation use the micro-prudential toolkit? What are the prospects for European Banking Union and what are the main challenges for the Russian banking system?
Finally, have economists missed important elements in their models of financial markets?
What research questions should we pursue to help Russian policy makers and practitioners design a robust financial system?
